This title in the Facts on File Library of Health and Living series has more than 600 entries covering pediatric health from the prenatal state through 18 years of age. From serious illnesses, such as Tay-Sachs disease, to simple problems, such as a nosebleed, the encyclopedia offers a discussion of the illness, then provides separate paragraphs on the cause, treatment, symptoms, and prevention for each problem discussed. Particularly helpful are the articles on common conditions such as ADHD, lice, and roseola. The articles are, on the whole, easy to understand and provide good basic information. There are numerous seereferences within the text that will direct the reader to the proper article to answer his or her questions. A table in the entry Immunizationprovides a time line showing when children should be vaccinated against common illnesses.
In addition to entries on diseases and conditions, there are brief articles on medical specialists, vaccinations, associations, even insects that can cause and spread disease. The book focuses on children in the U.S. almost exclusively, and several diseases that effect children in other parts of the world, such as Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, are not discussed. Given the recent spread of West Nile virus, monkeypox, and other illnesses to the U.S., perhaps prominent global children's illnesses should be included in future editions.
An extensive appendix section in volume 2 offers addresses and URLs for support groups and patient-information groups, a list of camps for kids with cancer, toll-free hotlines for information, poison hotlines around the country, children's hospitals, and a guide to handling health emergencies. A thorough index and an extensive bibliography round out the work, which is a recommended title for public libraries and consumer-health collections. Steve Stratton
